My 10 year plus washing machine suddenly cut off mid-cycle today, and wouldn't turn back on. I flipped the breaker, tried different cycles and nothing happened. So a few hours went by and I started to scoop out the water. I literally had just told my husband "I'm glad that I was doing a small load because I have been scooping for 15 minutes," when it cut back on and water poured back into the basin.
Could this be a faulty timer or motor? Would it even be worth the repair?

my washer is a 30 yr kenmore, and did the same thing 2x in 6yrs .....call local repair man (NOT Product repair service) . you need new timer where here in Pa cost $90 total including install great bargin cause as you know we have steel tubs with larger load capasity..90 is well worth 400 in long run for new washer with plastic tubs and smaller loads. good luck.

Shame you didn't put the make and model down. Still it could be the motor brush's which are not expensive, or a inlet valve again not expensive, I'd say its worth getting an engineer out as the older machines are much more reliable than the new ones and a lot of the parts are cheaper on older machines. The one thing that could make it beyond economical repair is if the bearing have gone. If they have then it would have been noisy on spin, or if you turn the drum by hand, then it wont feel smooth when you rotate it.

Washer motors don't have brushes, except for a few new front loader's. Sounds like the motor overheated and opened the internal overload (not replaceable). It cooled down and came on again. Suspect the motor is toast. In this day and age you are doing good to get 10 years reguardless of the brand. Timer or motor it's not worth repairing.

a machine that age is only worth fixing if you do it yourself or know someone that can--it probably needs a timer switch between 60-150.00 parts only.labor will be around 100.00 up.i think you can do the math---good luck!

Washers are reasonably priced nowadays!! It would NOT be worth the repair bill & it is very old....... so replacing it would probably be the better choice!!
