How does it work? What is the difference between it and an ordinary toilet? Are there any disadvantages to having one?

It has the waste, water and soil pumped form it after being shredded inside a machine that fits on the back of the toilet.
It means you do not have to rely on the soil pipe having a fall on it and the outlet pipe is considerably smaller.

It allows toilets to be installed in places they would not usually be able to be installed.

The disadvanteges are you should never put a sanitary towel down them and they occaionally need maintenance. If they do not work for any reason then you cannot use the loo until it is fixed

I think you will find a sanilav toilet is one that uses chemicals to brake down the solids then you just empty the gungy water away ( nice! ) Thay are used in touring caravans and motorhomes etc
creeping I think what you are talking about is a macerator ( saniflow ) that fits onto the back of the toilet it chops up the wast & pumps it to the sewer via a small bore pipe, like if you had a toilet in a basement or to far away from the sewer to run a 4" soil pipe. ( I'm talking serious sh1t here )

A Sanilav toilet has a built in macerator which liquidisies the waste in the toilet, then pumps it away into the main soil pipe. The outlet pipe is 42mm and the advantage of these are that they can be sited in places where it would be difficult to put your normal toilet. It can't be sited more that15 mtrs away from the soil pipe.

It's a white plastic box with a pump in it which fixes to the back of the loo, mashes everything and pumps it out along a small pipe. Useful for places where fitting a 4" soil pipe is difficult.
