Are you talking about the end of the Earth, or life as we know it?

Life as we know it will probably end in your lifetime. Everything that we have in modern society is based on fossil fuels, our power, our transport, our food production. And although we have several decades of the stuff left, pretty soon it's going to peak and go into depletion and decline. Even with the new technologies squeezing every last drop out of every oilfield we have left, it will start to run out in 2012.

There is nothing that can replace oil, there is nothing that is as energy rich, and we have done nothing to decrease our dependence on it. We are already fighting wars over it, and it has supported and maintained a huge population growth. That growth is not sustainable without the oil based fertilisers and pesticides that help to grow the food this population needs to eat.

To replace the energy in just one year's supply of oil you would have to build and install 32,000 wind turbines every year for 50 YEARS, or 91,000,000 solar panels every year for 50 YEARS, so we've left it too late for that. One of the signs that we have reached Peak Oil would be fluctuating oil prices that nevertheless keep rising.

After a period of adjustment, I'm sure the societies of the world will settle into a whole new way of living. I'm not sure however, how long that adjustment would take.

It depends on what you mean by "end"...
According to the Bible only God knows when the "Day of Judgement" will be.
According to the Mayan calendar, this 'cycle' will end in 2012...not sure of the actual date. But that does not necessarily mean the 'end of the world' as in, the world being destroyed...
There have been many predictions over the centuries regarding the 'end times' but no one can predict the future, so there is no way of knowing.
You could even say the 'end of the world' is when each of us dies. Because, after that, the world is dead to us.

The war in iraq will probably last until we have a democratic president (2008) but the war on terrorism will go on for many years. It already has been going on since 1992. There have been bombings at U.S. embassies and the world trade centers. These people are crazy. They will not stop until me and you and every other american is dead.

I know, I know... ask Sylvia Browne! Are you serious? The Mayans Long Calendar ends on Dec. 21st 2012... but it doesn't necessarily mean the world is going to end.
