Speaking of someone that has had 32 major surgeries and is left in chronic pain in my right knee - I sometimes wonder myself.
I know that pain tells the body to protect oneself from what is causing the pain as well as to treat the injured area. Chronic pain doesn't seem to fit that definition, especially after the area in question is no-longer healing. I would gather that permanent damage was done to the pain system and I just have to put up with it or continue taking my prescriptions to mask it.

No. It informs us that something harmful is happening to us and we should get away from that situation. Pain is like an alarm bell ringing warning us we have only a short time to escape before we are badly harmed.

from the body's point of view - no...if we didnt feel pain then we wouldn't pull our hand away frome a flame or avoid other dangerous things. Neither would we be made aware when something isn't right (inside our body)
However....wouldn't it be nice to have no pain?!!....Oh to have never experienced the dreaded toothache!! (a bad toothache is worse than child birth I reckon!!)

Nope, it is necessary to life. You feel pain so you know to stay away from whatever hurt you. I guess this could go as physically or emotionally. Though a lot of us keep going back to a person who emotionally hurt us.

Well, if you mean pysically, That kind of pain is necessary because it's your body way of telling you sumthing's wrong. Emotional pain however isn't necessary but is better for you if you don't go trough it.

My opinion is that pain is pointless but the mastery of or understanding of it with observation and equanimity is a true asset.
