There will always be people who abstain, but there will always be people who will try it due to curiosity. People take drugs for loads of reasons, peer pressure, recreation, depression, relaxation etc. But the main fact is that drugs alters the state of mind. It doesn't matter whether it is heroine, alcohol, Ecstasy or cannabis, they all change a persons state of mind and emotion. It can either improve or worsen the individuals mood.
The problems is when a person takes it long term it can erupt into an addiction, and that often courses a problem for the user physically, emotional, mentally and socially, if they become dependent and reliant on the particular drug of choice.

Everyone has a different reason. Some people have undergone serious emotional pain and just want to feel numb and worry free. Others do it because they are peer pressured, which is one of the main reasons teens do drugs. many teens do drugs to rebel. Hope this helped.

well, i used drugs as a teenager. i can't speak for anyone but myself.. . but i used drugs as a way to numb all the pain i felt from a dying mother, and pressure at home and school, and fell even heavier after having a miscarriage and breaking off an engagement, and all within the same 2 weeks my mom died.. and my dad went nuts.... so yeah.. thats why i used it. i first tried it recreationally.. i figured sure why not? i could use a few minutes of feeling good.. and then... i found out how good it felt to be numb, so i kept using. i used weed, pills, and alcohol. never anything else.. i was too scared of things like crack, coke, meth, and e.
thankfully, people who cared about me helped me quit.. and i'm now completely clean of all drugs and have been for 4 years. i've drank a few times.. but never enough to even get a buzz... usually just a sip here and there.. but i don't even do that anymore.....
hope that helps, everyone has a different reason for using though.

For lots of different reasons, pier pressure, curiosity, life experience, everyone does something that others may not agree with at some point in their lives. Its a part of life. And some are fortunate to live through it without ruining theirs, or others. I know, cause I've done it. And come through the other side. You only do it cause you want to, not because someone tells you to. And everyone has the will power to say no.

Some do it for fun,or out of boredom.
Some do it to relieve physical pain-especially with cannabis.
Some do drugs to forget problems they have in their life.

I have been asking myself the same question..like other people said it can be any one thing or a combination of the following:
Low self esteem
experimenting
peer pressure
anger
attention
release
they like the feeling of losing control
they like to forget
way of dealing with problems
they don't care; feel they have nothing to lose

A lot of it starts as "peer pressure" to impress there friends. Luckily MOST people wake up and smell the coffee and realise drugs are bad news , Unfortunately some people don't. Such a shame.
