Anne McCaffrey's dragon riders series (there are about 25 books in that series alone, and then there are break-off series like dragon drummers, dragon singers and dragon healers, something like that). Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series, of course. Both of these writers had to have a huge influence on Christopher Paolini. Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory have the Obsidian Trilogy. Phillip Pullman has His Dark Materials trilogy. James Patterson has When the Wind Blows, The Lake House which are sort of prequels to the Maximum Ride-Angel Experiment & Maximum Ride-School Out Forever books (the next in the series will be out in May this year). I love Sheri Tepper books--particularly Beauty (all young girls ought to read that)--since she has a strong ecology theme in all her books (and strong females). Elizabeth Scarborough's The Godmother. Margaret Peterson Haddix "Just Ella." Gregory MaGuire "Confessions of an Ugly Step Sister."

Well, I don't know what type of books you like to read besides HP and Eragon and I don't like those books, but I'll give you some ideas anyways.
An Abundance of Katherines (John Green)
The Boyfriend List & The Boy Book (E. Lockhart)
I'd Tell You I Love you But then I'd have to Kill you (Ally Carter)
Sisterhood of Traveling Pants series (Ann Brashares)
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (???)
Bloomability (Sharon Creech, really a kids' book but still amazing)

If you like Harry Potter and Eragon, try Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy, which starts with "The Golden Compass"--it's going to be a movie this November. It's one of my favorite fantasy series.
Also try Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching series. The first one is "The Wee Free Men." Read his books in private though, because otherwise you'll disturb people with your laughter.

there are a lot of good suggestions so far
i would add
Lois Duncan, Brain Jacques, Tamara Pierce,
you really can't go to wrong with Mercedes Lackey or Piers Anthony. these two are not it the Young Adult section but while they have adult content it isn't any worse than seeing a pg13 movie. i would say they were pretty clean authors
I would also suggest
Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky pie Brown
Mrs. Murphy series books in the Mystery section
they are murder mystery book were the cat and the corgi dog help their human Harry ( Mary Minor Harristen but harry to her friends since she was always covered with her pets hair in school, still carries the name as an adult) solve the mystery's. they are fun witty and clean

Anne McCaffrey has written several series. All are good. Her first one is the Dragon Song series: Dragondrummer, Dragonsinger, Dragonsong. She has a newer series Called Acorna's people. If your a pretty good reader read anything by Charles deLint: Yarrow, Memory and Dream, Spiritwalk, Widdershins. I could go on but those are a few of his. I hope this helps I too hate to run out of good books.
