I got mine to do that by feeding him after he see's my hand. Now whenever he see's a hand near his tank he follows it looking for food.

Actually, they dun do that. But I can offer you a tips which I always use when selecting good fighting fight.

Get a Black Marker- I'm using Zebra, Japan oil base, Fine Marker. Use the bottom-end of the Marker and point it slowly towards the betta. A healthy betta-especially male betta- would immediately flare-up and show his best form!

Why? (Haha) Because he will see that as an opponent's eyes staring at him, so he dun wan to loose out-due to his nature.

you can dip your moist finger in the food every time you feed it and trail it along the top of the water. They dont learn quickly though and have very short attention spans
