In your iTunes, on the little menu bar thing on the left side, it has a list of your library, your playlists, etc. When you iPod is plugged into your computer, it will also register on that menu. Next to it is a little eject arrow. Just click that and it will register that you "disconnected" your iPod from the computer. It's like with a computer; you don't just turn it off, you have to shut it down. With an ipod, you can't just unplug it, you have to eject it first. And, like the previous person mentioned, it will be okay if you just unplug it, just like a computer will be okay if you just turn it off. It's just not good for it.
And yes, it's always charging when it's hooked up to the computer.

Specs on the ipod nano says it takes 3 hours to recharge. So, I would also say yank it. I've done it with my shuffle. The shuffle lights orange when charging, btw.

Eject in in itunes. Hit the little button that is next to the name of your ipod. If it won't eject or your too impatient to wait for it. (like me b/c my stupid computer like freezes everytime i hit the eject button) then just pull the cable out.. People say its bad for your ipod but i've had ipods since like 2004 and i've always done this and have never had a problem.

If you want to disconenct it than there should be an eject icon next to your i pod icon. If the power icon on your ipod has a thunderbolt looking thing on it than it is charging

disconnect it, and look through the book that comes with it, it says how to reset it, i cant remember how to, but its like putting it on hold then taking it off again then pressing the middle button and the up button or something like that, it's in the manual.

Follow what it says: Do not disconnect! And yes, it is charging. The sign that it says "Do not disconnect" means that it is charging. Once it is done charging, the Do not disconnect sign will vanish. Just don't unplug it until the sign vanishes
