I was informed of 2 possible locations for fuel pump on the 1988 Olds Calais. (1) Located in top of gas tank with access from the trunk. (2) Top of gas tank, and must drop tank to replace.
What to do?

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank.It is electrically powered by very low voltage. You must remove the tank and while you are replacing the pump, replace the 'fuel screen' at pump also. This may have been the cause for the pump to go bad as they filter the fuel before going into the pump and usually get clogged by the debris in tank.

Check under the rear seat. Usually there is an access cover there - down to the top of the fuel tank. if you remove that top plate on the tank - you will probably find the pump. BEFORE you do that you should trace the fuel lines to make sure the pump is not mounted externally somewhere.

dude you might as well cry now., It's a booger of a job. Raise the car on 4 jack stands for safety. Put a board on a larger floor jack and then unhook the straps and lower it down and then replace it. You will have to take care removing the locking plate to take out the fuel pump, one spark can spell disaster. If your up to the challenge. I bet the gas tank is full of fuel too? Boy are you going to have fun. The dang thing sits right under the back seat.

your close,,fuel pump is inside the tank, mounted in top,to replace fuel must be drained from tank and then remove tank,,,if no access to a lift is easiest if you can roll rear of car onto ramps to gain as much space as posible, because you will need the room to drop tank,,,many discount parts houses have the cartridge style pumps,,,,but best results will be to replace the entire pump& float assy with ac/delco parts,,,,,,good luck

Drop the tank and replace the pump. Not easy if you don't have a lift and a transmission jack to put under the tank.
