Eliminate or cut back on smoking, caffeine and carbonated sodas which weaken the body and block maximum hair growing potential.
Eat a healthy diet. Avoid foods that are high in sugar or fat.
Treat your hair like a piece of fine old lace. Treat it carefully avoiding any unnecessary brushing, combing or handling.
Avoid use of hot water, hot blow dryers or other hair care tools that may stress the hair.
Have a weekly scalp massage to provide stimulation to the hair follicles.
Do a series of ongoing hot oil treatments to protect the hair's shaft.
Have regular trims to eliminate split ends and allow the hair to look and feel healthier.
Get plenty of rest and sleep to allow your body to grow hair.

Hair are already dead cells that spring out of the scalp; applying lotions and oils won't do much good moreover block the pores that secrete oil and sweat glands that maintain a healthy scalp.
Hair is mostly protein, so eatiing a high protein diet with regular exercise (more than enough hydration), and ample rest speeds up the hair growth process (doubles and even triples the speed up).
Exercising with enough sweating helps open up pores in the scalp as well, which helps get rid of nitrous wastes off near hair roots aiding in thier healthy growth. It also helps in maintaining a healthy circulation to the scalp. [Hope it's obvious, do take a shower right away after exercising, so that you can get rid of all the salts from the scalp before they get soaked into the pores and dry up...kinda deafeats the purpose of sweating....you can talk to you buddies after smelling fresh and clean]
Your scalp's skin is much like your facial skin, so if you do have oily skin, do use shapoo to get rid of excess oil from the scalp just like you use facial soap to get rid of dead skin and open up pores.
Hair that split at ends wern't strong enough in the first place to hold on together to each other as a single strand (since strands of hair are bound together with a biological glue and it's 'quality' depends on the type of food you eat, and how much of that food actually gets up to your scalp)

So eat well, exercise, water and rest...NO split ends, NO thinning (different from straight, curly or intermediate hair) and you'll have a spurt up there in no time.

You can expect about three inches/ month of growth if you do what's mentioned above for about a year with regularity (Trust me it's worth it for the amout of people who often come up to me and tell me how they would die to have so thick hair...and I just tell them what I told you)
