If I have a small hole in the muffler on my truck, I'm likely to get pulled over for excessive noise. While the officer is writing me a ticket, a Harley will go by making enough noise to shake my fillings loose. How is he legal while my far quieter truck is not?

He's not legal. And today, he's probably not on a Harley.

The Fed says the exhaust can't be modified, and must meet certain limits. In practice, States have their own limits, which vary. The police only really bother with local and state laws. A lot of us run near the upper limit. The ones that go beyond, which are illegal, are starting to get the rest of us caught in the crunch.

It is illegal for motorcycles as well as cars. However, since motorcycles get much less use than cars, it is seen as an insignificant nuisance, and not a big enough deal to bother about. The really sad part of this is that almost all of these bikes are actually making LESS power than before they messed with the exhaust system.

Pity. I prefer quieter bikes.

Now dude don't you know most of the police are Harley riders? LOL so it goes without saying... They will let that slide with illegal exhaust on a bike than a car making the same amount of noises. However, be on their bad side and I bet no matter what kind of Harley you have they will ticket the rider.

Because bikers are way cooler than pickup drivers with bad mufflers.

First of all I would like to say that Alan is a moron. Second, it is because everybody today seems to like motorcycles that sound like rattle trap pieces of crap aka: Harley Davidson. They sound like ****, they look like ****, they run like ****, and they are extremely overpriced for a piece of **** that will resurface your garage floor with a nice coat of pennzoil.

Any modification of the exhaust from factory specifications on any vehicle can lead to a ticket. Of course, HD's from the factory are loud, therefore they aren't modified, are they?
