If you got a summons on a criminal matter you will need to request a court-appointed lawyer. They will still cost a little though. If you got a summons in a divorce you can contact your local legal aid center and see if you qualify and they might be able to help you. If you are getting sued but have no money or assets then you have nothing to worry about because there's nothing to take. (Just kidding on the last part) Go to legal aid for that too. You don't want judgements on your record.

you can go to your local legal aid office. They would be pretty much the only organization that could do it for free or reduced cost.

Look for the phone number in your government pages of the phonebook. Look up the number for legal aid

If they want you to pay, just say "no comprende" act like you are from mexico and it should be free.

sign up for pre-paid legal it's 30 dollars a month if you want to make money when you sign others up, like 10 if you don't. You so many hours of lawyer time a year, and they update your will for free yearly.
