No you don't need to lose the plug to go into labor just as not all women break their bag of water. Most women lose it without even knowing it happened.

Only sometimes. My first time I did not lose my mucous plug. I kept waiting and waiting for it! My water broke and gushed all over the bathroom!

The second time I was dilated to a 2 three weeks before I actually went into labor. The last week of my pregnany, I would have strings of mucous pouring out! It was the grossest thing!!! It was the texture of a runny nose! But I KNEW that because of that, I was nearing labor.

Usually your body will release the mucous plug as you begin to dilate. A lot of times though, this never happens!

Good luck! You are in for quite an experience!!!

I had a baby 5 weeks ago today and didnt have any signs that i was in labour - i just finsihed asking a question on here asking the same thing (i was 38 and 1/2 weeks) and then lay down for a nap for 2 hours and when i woke my waters broke.

I kept waiting for the plug but i still dont know what it would have looked like.

Nope not everyone woman. I didn't loose it with my first child, instead my water broke. WIth my second child I lost it and had my son 5 hours later. Now I am 38 weeks pregnant and I lost my mucus plug 2 days ago and have had nothing yet. So I think it depends on the woman.

I went into labor with my last daughter and didn't lose my mucous plug but my doc said that's it's possible to lose it and not know it.

I lost it two minutes before my water broke, ten minutes after my first contraction and 90 minutes before my daughter was born on her bedroom floor.

It's one of the things to look out for, but like most of pregnancy and birth, unfortunately noone can tell you exactly what it means as every pregnancy and every woman is different.

It's frustrating but it's nature. Good luck!
