Hemoglobin is an extremely complex protein molecule that consists of 4 smaller heme proteins connected to an iron element. Hemoglobin is found in our red blood cells.

Hemoglobin has one function: the transport of gases through the body.

It has the ability to transport oxygen from the lungs (via the bloodstream) to all other parts of the body. Once the hemoglobin arrives at it's "destination", the oxygen is released and it collects carbon dioxide, which it then transports (via the bloodstream) back to the lungs. The carbon dioxide is released out through the respiratory process, and the hemoglobin is ready to transport oxygen once again.

Hemoglobin carries oxygen and CO2. Only about 1/4 of the CO2 is removed by hemoglobin. Most CO2 is dissolved in the blood or converted into bicarbonate.
