When my son was a wee bit of a critter, I would immediately remove him from public. Yes, we went home. Immediately. He then got a 'time out' and was spoken to about his behavior.

If the child knows, or even suspects, you will stay in spite of their poor behavior, you'll have a really rough time getting them to behave. Especially if they know the outing is something you really want to do.

You have to tell them ahead of time what standard of behavior is expected before you leave the house, the consequences of those actions and then follow through. THE FIRST TIME. Don't tell them more than once, leave the very first time they act up and follow through with the punishment at home.

Before you leave the house, remind the child that he/she is expected to be well-behaved while in public.
