Why would you want to do that ?? I think most "modern" cars have a rev limiter built into the fuel injection which will cut the engine before it damages itself. Older cars would go to a high speed where the valves would "float" in other words not have time to close all the way - this limited the top rev. caused some rattling and banging of the valves - not good to do for very long.

most newer cars have a rev limiter on them when the car is in neutral, if you hit about 4,000 rpm. the engine will start cutting out to protect the engine.

I would definitely not recommend it. Whether your doing it to show off or what, its not good for your engine. Not only does it waste a hell of a lot of fuel quicker, but you could harm your engine. But if you must, I would recommend staying around 1500 to 2500 rpm’s while in neutral.

OH HELL NO!!!! Don't even go there. It not only not good on your engine. It is pricey to fix when you throw a rod and you will. The safe RPM for idle is around 1500 rpm's. 2000rpm when you test engine diagnostics.

Hard on the engine. Don't pop it into drive either, thats very very hard on the transmission.
