At the start of today's match between Rep. of Ireland v Wales I noticed that NONE of the Welsh players sung the national anthem or even appeared proud or emotional.Contrast this with last week's rugby match against England..nearly all the players were singing with pride and emotion...I wonder why this difference.

Probably because rugby players have more pride in playing rugby for their country. Rugby in Wales is like a second religion. It's in the blood. Football is... just football. Maybe as also to do with the fact that the 6 nations are on every year so there are more times that the anthem is actually sung. Lastly, the anthem is actually in Welsh so takes a bit of learning and effort. And very lastly..... rugby players are fabulous!!!! Happy viewing!

Simple.. hardly any of the Wales players speak Welsh ( in fact probably none of them) , none live in Wales, or even grew up in Wales. With a few exceptions, most of them have qualifed to play for Wales because of a Welsh parent. So why should they automatically know the words to an anthem they are unfamiliar with?

The Welsh rugby players are mainly from around south Wales, where Welsh is not widely spoken. But they are reperesenting their nation at its national sport, so its a much bigger thing. They are almost morally expected to know it (mind you, I'll bet most of them just mime the words!)

But its got nothing to do with being "patriotic". You dont have to be seen to sing the anthem in order to be proud to represent your country. Its only within the last twenty years or so, when TV showed close ups of the players' faces, that any of them felt compelled to sing. Traditionally, they would just stand there respectfully.

I should imagine that the football players are only bothered about the ammount of money they will pick up after the match. If there was an award or cash bonus for the most patriotic player then alas you would see real patriotism!

I spoke to an old ex England international from the 50's and he said "they would have crawled to Wembly on there hands and knees over broken glass to wear an England shirt". Mind you if they had done that they would be in no fit state to play!

Yes mate I agree with you. Just look at how many players play for adopted countries like all the Brazilian players who play for european countries.
