EC is very effective when taken promptly (72 hours) after unprotected sex, but can be taken up to 5 days after. It works to prevent ovulation and fertilization - basically it stops your ovaries from releasing a mature egg, and prevents sperm from joining with an egg. It's also been theorized that EC may also prevent implantation of a fertilized egg, but that hasn't been proven yet.
