I need a printer for a Compaq computer. I don't know where to look to find a printer that is compatible. I looked under Faxes and Printers but as far as I could understand there were no names, numbers or anything else that could help me know what to buy. My old computer gave me printer company names and printer numbers that would be compatible with it. But I can not find the info on this one. I looked under support under printers but I still don't see what I'm looking for.

But are all printers compatible with all computers?? Don't I have to have some info that let's me know?
I don't want to hook up only to find they won't work together.

First, it is NOT so much the computer as the available connections and the operating system.
MOST new printers require the USB connector, and most newer computers have the USB connector.
Check your computer user manual to find out what connectors are available. Ex. USB 1.1, USB 2.0, Parallel Port. (You will only need 1 connection.)
Then check on printers that have the same type of connection requirement.

I suggest a laser printer rather than an inkjet for B&W, unless you have to have color, since the slightly higher initial cost is more than offset by the expense of the relatively short-lived inkjet cartridges.
(I bought a B&W laser printer that would print both sides of the paper for less than $150, and the toner cartridge lasted over 1 year, while my color inkjet needs cartridges almost monthly. I do 80% of my printing on the laser!!)
My Inkjet is ALSO a color scanner and a copier which comes in handy from time to time.
I shall NOT recommend any brands, as that is more a matter of choice, and most "major" brands are pretty good.

As to where to look, use your search program to find on-line companies that handle printers. Off hand I can think of several, and I deal with several, but again I won't list specifics.
For local sales try office supply stores, computer stores; and/or W-mart, K-mart, Target, Sears, etc.
I note that you can usually get a better price on-line than at a local store, but the local store will usually handle refills for what they sell.

Hope this helps, feel free to contact me for further information if you want.

You do not have to buy a printer from the company that made you computer. If you have a USB port you should be able to use just about any printer you so desire. For ease of installation, good support and I would recommend Hewlett-Packard. If you go to their website that I have linked below and find the link that says "Help Me Chose", it will ask a series of questions and recommend printers that will do the things you want a printer to do.

I have seven computers and use different brand printers on them all. They are all plug and play and either come with drivers or not, I have no problems with any of these brnads and You do not have to use only a Compac printer on your computer.

Most any modern HP all-in-one will work well for you. You can get a nice one at Costco or Sams for around $99.
