He always fallows me everywhere i go in the house, every room. He’s basically my shadow, at the dog park he refuses to play with other dogs and just lingers around me to play fetch with him. When one of my friends takes the leash and i walk away he starts whining and bitching like there’s no tomorrow, when i play around with my friends or get into a fight with my brother he jumps in like a lassie and tries to rescue me. How can i make him less dependent? Its not like he’s a puppy he’s about 3 years old or so. it gets annoying at times very annoying. If i lock him out of my room he starts making weird grumpy noises. The hole fallowing me around the house is the worst. He sleeps behind my chair and gets in the way of walking around.

Goldens are very people oriented, social animals. They are possilbly the most easily trained or easily injured/insulted dogs there are. They are very sensitive to discipline and will mope and become depressed if chastised harshly.

Your dog basically worships you as the alpha of his pack. You are his reason to live, the source of his food, and he is giving back to you, in the only way he knows how.

It would have been useful when he was young, if you had crate trained him, so that when he did get underfoot, he could have a time out. That's not out of the question now, but making him stay in a confined space is likely to create more whining and upset than either of you can tolerate.

If you have a room where you can block him off from you, or even a room that you can put a baby gate in the doorway where he can see, but not reach you, that might be a good place to start in "separating" your Siamese twin from your side.

I would also recommend you go to the library and look up some of the dog behavior books by Dr. Nicholas Dodman of Tufts University. He is a behaviorist, and an excellent resource for problems like this.

He absolutely adores you but you are right he should be able to have some time by himself without going insane. You should try to train him to be by himself just like with any other training you will need to be consistent. Teach him to sit and stay or lie down and stay, walk away and if he doesn't follow you or whines give him a good reward, start with a few seconds, then a minute, then a couple of minutes, five minutes until you are able to have him 15 minutes away from you, you can invent a new form of training like Stay and Play or Don't follow me, it's all about being creative and being constant. Eventually you will be able to teach him to have time by himself.

Goldens bond to their owners and with that comes following you around everywhere. I have 2 Goldens here that do the same thing and personally I love it. You will learn to watch out for them. I haven't been able to go to the bathroom alone in years! LOL He is protecting you from what he see's as danger when you and your brother play fight. It is instintive in Golden's to be protective over the people they love. He sees it as her duty.

Your dog loves you and wants to be near you no matter where your are.

goldens are very socialable, loyal dogs, so it is natural for him to want to be with his person. it sounds like yours has a bit of a separation anxiety. you should have worked on it when he was younger. i would go to a pet store or library and find a good book dealing with the subject. you should find many helpful suggestions. good luck

Because dogs are naturally pack animals, and to it you are the pack leader which it will follow until another leader takes the role.

Try to give him more attention. He sounds like a needy dog. Does he rais his paw? That shows he wants to play.
