Assuming that it goes black and never displays the desktop no matter how long you wait...

Try booting up in Safe Mode. Repeatedly tap the F8 key while the computer is booting up and select Safe Mode from the boot menu that appears.

If it boots up in Safe Mode, then you either have a virus or a bad driver. Run your virus scanner. If that passes fine, then you need to figure out what driver is locking things up. Click Start/Run and type in msconfig and click OK. Use the choices on the General, Services, and Startup tabs to narrow down the problem.

If it doesn't boot up into Safe Mode, then something basic about Windows has gone bad. You'll need to get the install disk and reinstall Windows.

Other thoughts: if you have an OEM pc (Dell, Gateway, etc.) and are reinstalling Windows with the OEM Windows install disk, it's very likely going to wipe out everything on your disk. If you can, remove the hard drive and install it in another PC that's running the same version of Windows. When it boots up, you should be able to access your hard drive and offload everything you want to keep.

Im assuming you are using windows. Use the windows disk and do a system recovery. Your MBR needs re done possibly. It could be something completely different though.

It probably boots up slow also.Sounds like you need to add more memory. You could also delete off stuff you do not use and that might help some.
