Try rubbing it with alcohol. Works like a charm.

I'd try Mr.Clean magic eraser first, it removes permanent marker on some surfaces, if that doesn't work try using lighter fluid, don't use steel wool, it will scratch, unless you want the permanent marker replaced by unsightly scratches. I've heard hairspray removes ink, not sure about what it can do for permanent marker. If nothing works, tell your dad what happened and buy a tablecloth.

You need to be really careful when using nail polish remover... if you had used that on a wood and varnished table, you would have removed the varnish.... The easiest and best way to remove all ink (including permanent sharpie marker) is to use plain old rubbing alcohol. It won't ruin the surface of anything.....

Try alcohol, paint thinner, nail polish remover, TSP dissolved in water, bleach but NOT ALTOGETHER. If none of that works, try lightly sanding it if it is wood. Other wise, use a table cloth.

Try a magic eraser. It works. My daughter got marker on my coffee table and it got it right out.
