Great question I've often wondered the same thing. And I really don't like going to a doctor that just practices medicine.

sure you can practice being a mechanic. Hole-in-the-wall repair shops do it all the time with back yard practicing mechanics fixing your car. I would bet most, if not all are ASE Certified. Being I started my roots as a back yard mechanic I find it hard to trust small shops and learning mechanics. Most have no long term hard core problem solving experience. But if your out to save money, they will be your best bet,. Sadly even a dealer will rip you off.
