New findings in this field, which link rhipidistians and labyrinthodonts, provide insight into how pelvic and pectoral girdles evolved over time.

OR:

New findings in this field which link rhipidistians and labyrinthodonts provide insight into how pelvic and pectoral girdles evolved over time.

Should there be commas or no commas?? Please also tell me why.

There should be commas. They contain a dependant clause which gives further explanation to the phrase 'this field'.

There should be a comma.

the part 'which link rhipidistians and labyrinthodonts' is a phrase, and needs to be separated out. Your sentence wants to say that the new findings provide insight. The phrase that you added, provide additional info about the findings, but it is a spearate clasue unto itself.

it depends on what you mean. If you mean there are new findings and you only are referring here only to those which link thingy and whatchumcallit, then no commas. If you mean there are new findings and these fabulous new findings link flotsam and jetsam, then use the commas (this puts the phrase 'which link rh...' in apposition to 'new findings').

In other words commas make the phrase 'which link rh...' explanatory and no commas make it limiting.

The commas are necessary. The clause which they surround is an independent clause, not essential to the sense of the rest of the sentence.
