Hey, I love to role play, esp. D&D, but I don't have any military, combat or martial experience in real life. I find my character in difficult gaming situations and my character won't know how to react or know what's best to do... because I don't. Other than experience, is there anyway to improve my gaming skills?

Other than watching movies (fantasy, military/war, and martial arts)and playing more, you can pick up some tips in your PHB, back in the combat section. Read through the forums on combat and understand how your abitlities, skills and feats work. Using these correctly will allow you to be a better player. Really, you will learn the most by playing more and with a varied group of people. You will learn from them and the experiences each of you has in various combat situations.

I have found that it also helps to use miniatures so you can better visualize the combat and spacial orientation of each combatant. This will help you figure out areas of limitation or advantage. Also make sure you work with your other players and talk while you are in combat, it is a free action.

Watch alot of movies with a Medieval setting. Read the canned AD&D adventures and wikipedia or google the words (ie "ballista") that relate to military and combat. There are lots of websites with modern photographs of Medieval weaponry and armor.

Talking to more experienced players & your DM.
Checking out articles in Dragon magazine or online websites.
Dungeons & Dragons for Dummies was a good book.
Watch "Kill Bill".
I liked the roleplaying, my problem was all the math involved.
I streamlined it to one cheat sheet with all the vital numbers already added up, so I only had to add the D20 roll to it.
