If the Pc freezes after a clean install of windows, make sure you have installed all the required drivers. (boot into safe mode and install them if necessarry). If the problem persists I would do a check up of your system components starting with the motherboard.

For anyone using w2k/xp you can fix a damaged master boot record by getting to the recovery console (boot to XP CD)and typing: fixboot

For Win98

If you have a Windows Boot disk, or have the ability to create one, do so. Make sure that FDISK.COM (or .EXE) is on it.

Boot with the diskette.

When you get the A:>\ prompt, go to the C: drive.

At the C:\ prompt, type this: FDISK/MBR

That command can (not always) fix the Master Boot Record, which may fix your problem. The bottom line is that doing this will not hurt anything, but may help.

If these don't help, you may have to reformat the hard drive..which would lose any current data. Even so, this may be an indication the hard drive is going bad.

There's always the option of taking to a PC repair shop and see if they can repair the format or at least save some data using special software.

Hi. FAT means File Allocation Table and your error means something got messed up. Try starting in ' safe mode ' by tapping the F8 key while it boots. If you get a safe boot, use "Start> Run> " and use chkdsk to see if it finds the problem. You should be able to reinstall from the CD in any event. Hope this helps.

when u try to re install windows are you doing it after the pc has started or are you using "boot from disk"

Either way, are you wiping out your hard drive first or are you trying to just reload?

Hint: If you wipe out your hard drive first you will make sure that you get a clean copy.

If you need any more information I would be happy to help you out. Just message me
