If you were a volunteer lifeguard you wouldn't get paid anything. Volunteer = someone who is not bound by a contract or agreement to perform work. Therefore, they are not legally intitled under any law to receive pay.

But if a lifeguard were bound by an employment contract then they would be entitled to at the very least the state's minimum wage in which they work for. The minimum wage will vary across the nation from state to state but it could be anywhere from $6-$7 or even above that. They could also agree in their employment contract to work for more than the minimum wage if their work is more involved or involves more activity.

In Canada (specifically BC) the starting wage for a
newly NLS registered lifeguard (that may teach kids as well) is about $17.50-$19. DOE and can continue to earn up to
with further training and experience $25-$26/hr this is at
rec centres, pools etc. Summer camps hire lifeguards
at room/board + an average of $10 /hour.
It can be a good job for a teen with the training. Far cry from Mac Daddies or Booger King.
Mind you the training can cost you in excess of $1000 before hand.
