A cherry tree would prefer full sun and the easiest fertilizer is the type that you pound into the ground around the base of the tree at the beginning of the growing season. If it's a new transplant, be sure to water deeply every week to ensure best results.

Trees need sun, especially if they are going to be producing fruit. They can stand a bit of shade though and do just fine. I have an ornamental cherry between two houses and it is a magnificent bloomer on part shade.
