I get really tired of people making comments about how sad it must be that my child is an only child. It's not like I planned to have only one child, but that is how the good Lord planned it. I haven't been on birth control since he was two, and he is now 14. My husband and I haven't done anything medically to have more, just think if it was meant to be it would be. I just feel lucky I had one at all. How would you respond to people's comments like "why only one?" and "how sad for your child that he doesn't have a brother/sister". I don't really think it is any of their business but feel I should respond. Any suggestions? Thanks!

"I can buy him a dog. It would be cheaper."

"Why? You offering a trust fund for college for the little darlings if I have more?"

"I think it's very sad you would question the will of the divine in my life."

I think the third is the most polite answer, really.

I totally agree do not worry what others think. I have only one child and my husband is ok with it. To be honest with the way society is I am glad. I always thought I would have at least three children but I have one. We are not planning anymore unless something happens. ( Besides we have two dogs and really it keeps me busy)

That would depend on how well you know that person. If they are a total stranger, or barely better, it is appropriate to say that it is none of their business! You may also counter with how you really feel about it: that you feel lucky to have even one child.

Good luck.

We have just the one as well, and for very much the same reason as you. We've had the same comments too.

My response tends to be either a shrug and a "Whatever", or a more jokey "Trust me, he's more than enough".

Hey, just noticed, mine is 14 too.

It is none of their business! YOu don't need to dignify their rudeness with a response, but if you feel the need, just give them the answer you gave us. It's just how God planned it. If it was meant to be, it would have happened. :) And as for their question of his happiness, just tell them he is happy receiving all of your undivided attention. :)
