My doctor suggested that I take the Depo Provera shot because my periods are not regular (I have been having problems since 9th grade and I am now 22 years old) I was on the pill (tried different ones) but I had to come off because I had really long periods and bad headaches. I am african american and slightly overweight. I have done some research and my main concern regarding the side effects are weight gain and hair loss. I know that the only reason people gain weight is because of the increased appetite. I'm not gonna lie I have bad eating habits. I would like to hear from someone who is on the shot or have taken it. Is it worth the risk?

I can't tell you what to do. You have to weigh the options yourself.

Personally, I wouldn't go back to depo, given the option. I was on it for about 2 years, and I had a very bad experience with it. I have weight issues myself, and I gained quite a bit more after getting on depo. It also increased my depression. It stopped my period completely - I'd only bleed once every three months or so.

It honestly sounds like you have a sensitivity to hormone-based birth control, so any type will probably cause you similar issues to the pill. However, if you're trying to regularize yoru periods, the pill or the Nuva-ring are going to be your best bets.

I haven't had the shot, but I do have concerns about it as well as prolonged use of the pill. I am in my 40's and many of my friends who relied on the pill for many years found that when they wanted to have children, they could not. Take that possibility into consideration when making your decision.
