Recently my ball python came down with mites. I treated him with mite-off, and he seemed to be getting better, after 2 applications. I sprayed him and his bedding(I use reptibark) and he seemed to be getting better. Two days ago, when it was time for his feeding, he wouldnt eat. He usually eats 2 fuzzy mice a week. then last night I noticed that he was swollen, his whole body. from the neck down, to the tip of his tail. he is all puffy and squishy. It also seems that the mites have retreated into his vents. is there some way to take care of the mites in his vents? Why would his body swell? I have also noticed some mucus around his mouth...does anybody know of any treatment that i can do to make him better of know what could have caused this? Is it all related to the mites? please help I am so worried about him!

This needs to be taken care of by a vet.
There are many different kinds of mites and the vet will have to run a few tests to determine* what it is specifically that your pet has.

Snakes don't necessarily have to eat every week. The will not kill the mouse if they aren't going to eat it. I know from experience that Ball pythons are very picky eaters, and they can sometimes go months without eating. Don't worry too much. Zig Zag might simply not be hungry. Check the cage and see if he pooped out the last mouse he ate. If not, he's not going to eat until it comes out. Also, you said you've only had him for 3 weeks, which is the average time for them to get used to a new place. How big are your pythons? How big is the terrarium? This might affect Zig Zag, as the cage might be too small for the both of them. You don't need to separate the snakes just because one ate and the other one didn't. Just make sure the cage is large enough for the both of them to be comfortable (enough: water, basking, hiding, climbing, ... for each one of them) And about what the other people said about bringing it to the vet: don't do it. You'll be waisting your money. Brink Zig Zag to the vet if it regurgitates the food or doesn't eat for a while longer. Zig Zag might also be shedding. Snakes do not eat before they shed. Look at its eyes, and if they're kindda glossy, it's going to shed. In that case, increase the humidity in the cage by spraying water. Another good trick is to soak it in warm water for a little bit. Hope this helped! ;-D

Mites often carry other diseases. Mites don't go away unless you completely sanitize the cage and continue treatment. Mites lay an awful lot of eggs that hatch after treatment. It can take months to get rid of mites. Be persistent. Your snake needs medical attention immediately. Mucuous around the mouth sounds like a secondary respiratory infection which can be caused from the mites, stress, or low ambient temperature.

Your ball python is in serious trouble, get him to a vet if you want him to have any chance of survival. Keep in mind that most vets have very little experiance with reptiles, so look for one who treats exotics. If you can not find one in your area, a Dr who treats birds is your second best choice, they are very close on the evolutionary scale. We have two here in Jax that will see wildlife cases, and they are excellent with reptiles, (i saw on give a young iguana mouth to mouth, that takes dedication!) I wish you the best of luck.
