can anyone explain the fireplace puzzle in Myst 4 Revelation?

I have used the help facility to get past the puzzle, but where were the clues to the code in the game? Was there a clue, or was the answer purely pot luck?

Why don't you try looking for a walkthrough....there are plenty of sites with them!!!
