I heard that he would purposely mess up a word or verse just to keep people on their toes while listening. I watched the rooftop concert when he was singing Don't Let Me Down and he did this. Is this true?

He used to say live when playing the song"revolution" .....you can count me "in"

I know he's a bit of an eccentric,so that wouldnt suprise me at all if he purposely threw in words during a live performance.

I know that the Greatful Dead would change whole verses of their songs, and I was at a Tom Petty concert where he purposefully (I hope) sang the lines of the first verse in reverse order. A local folk band I like never plays the same song the same way twice, so it's always fun to see what they come up with. Much more interesting that way.

I think that they do it to make the concerts more memorable. It's great if you go to your favorite artists show and they play all your favorite songs, but it's even better if they switch things and add new elements, to make the experience more individual and personal, both for you and them.

john lennon, just like many great songwriters always mix up the lyrics of their music. early on though with the beatles, john would just sing a bunch of garbage in the melody of the song. he said all the girls would scream so loud you couldn't hear the music anyway. he did that as a joke on them.
but john and guys like bob dylan, neil young are always changing their lyrics. keeps em new and fresh.
