I have a Nam vet on my road. For over 20 years after the war, he would drive off in the mountains during the 4th of July so that he couldn't hear the explosions.

I have PTSD because of a very serious illness that I had and am still dealing with and because my father's serious illness occurred at the same time. I have alot of nightmares, not about the illness, but about lack of control and feeling unprotected (raped, chased, murdered, etc.). I can't remember anything about what happened to me or my father, it's like a a white wall has been erected in my brain and my brain won't even allow me to remember. If I do remember something, due to someone mentioning it and reminding me, I basically can't function and I just burst into tears. I am very sensitive to noise, and sometimes if something starts out as normal (say my boyfriend is tickling me), I can become really frightened because I feel like it's compromising my control/safety. Alot of people with PTSD have dissociation and hypervigilance. I'm making my symptoms sound alot worse than they actually are. Normally I'm ok, but it's just in certain situations that remind me of things that I really feel terrified.

Yes. One of my best friends has PTSD, the result of vicious sexual abuse endured as a child. There have been many different manifestations of their PTSD, depending on general health, medications taken, and level of coping at the time.
This individual tends towards severe depression and isolation. During bad episodes, other people's voices would sound like the abuser's, and the patient would actually "see" the abuse taking place over and over again (flashbacks). The patient's reaction to this was to put a stranglehold of control (or try to!) on everybody in their life and relationship circle. Failing in this, the patient would either withdraw, threaten suicide, or resort to violence.
PTSD is no cakewalk. I recommend the book "I Hate You; Don't Leave Me" as a resource.

One of my brothers tackled a 'suspicious' man. The guy was wearing a jacket. Coulda been a suicide bomber. Another brother sleeps with a gun and the safety off. He has a nasty habit of bolting up out of the bed with it whenever the automatic yard lights come on.
Funny you should mention the sleeping with eyes open thing. My Father did that, but he only slept with one eye open. Guess he finally started to relax after all these years.
