I have a Ford Fiesta Mk 5 (2002 model) and 2 weeks ago it ran out of engine water. I have since filled up but my temperature gauge has been very temperamental in terms of my engine temperature (always flicking between normal and too hot).

After checking the water container, there was this fluid which was like a red/orange colour and smelt awful.

I have water etc anyone got any ideas? Hope it's nothing serious, ie costly.

that is rust water. you need to mix the water with antifreeze. now you will need to flush the radiator. you can get some from any auto parts store. fill it back up with a 50-50 mix of water and anti freeze. check your oil to see if the head gasket is blown.

This may be rust etc. stirred up when it ran dry & you refilled it. I'd seriously recommend, though, that you get a garage to check for head gasket failure, that's favourite if you ran it that dry. They can do a "sniff test" over the radiator which will detect hydrocarbons. I'm afraid I have a nasty feeling about all this . . .

you check your cylinder head gasket by taking out the dipstick first thing in the morning before you start the car. Look for light grey oil and water, it should be clear or black depending when it was last changed. any water on the top of the oil means head gasket and oil change asap

sounds like the head gasket's gone. the orange colour and the smell is the combustion gases reacting with the antifreeze in your cooling system. get it replaced asap before you need to have a new head put on too

Fit New Thermostat, give it a week than if water level stay same drane water and refill wit Antifreeze, or water atack aluminum and steel and rust it aways. Antifreezes have corrosion inhibitor so uses al yer round.

Drain your radiator fill up again with water and anti freeze and check it ever day ,it could be that you have had a blockage in it the cooling system and it cleared it,s self.

At the least it’s a head gasket… sounds like you have cracked the head or worse…
Take it to a mechanic…

your radiator is 'super' clogged.. when the water doesnt circulates the engine it will vaporised.. (thats cause your water tank empty).. have the radiator serviced or change it.. then flush the water passage with clean water.. and remember not to put TOO MUCH radiator coolant because coolant is corrosive.. thats why u can see yellow/orange sludge..
