A combination. Her mother was an opera singer, so she naturally picked up her octaves, and her mother being a teacher was the best part as well, because she learned control, and now she's a multi platinum bombshell! Wooo Hoo!

she has the natural talent, and and mother was a voice teacher to help her. generally speaking, without the talent, doing 5 octaves would be nearly impossible.

A little of each. You have to have the right natural range to start, but you also have to do a lot of practice with a teacher who knows how to achieve it.

she does this little thing with her throught that makes her voice go farther back into her head so she can sing higher.
