Booker T & The MGs - "Eleanor Rigby" (Beatles cover)

I don't normally like cover versions, unless the artist adds something to the song to make it their own. I don't like it when they just make a straight copy of the original. Booker T's cover of this Beatles classic is a great example this, it's a much more funkier version. I played it to a friend once and asked them to guess what the original was (the cover is just instrumental), it wasn't until I started to sing the lyrics to it that they realised what it was.

Although original interpretations are the best way to make a cover version, sometimes it doesn't work, like Rolf Harris' version of "Stairway to Heaven"

You mentioned Elvis Costello and I immediately thought of Shipbuilding sung by Robert Wyatt. I think his version was even better than Costellos.
Superb question.

Mike Flowers & His Pop Orchestra's version of Wonder Wall. It beats the Oasis release everytime!

It might have something to do with the fact that I heard it being accompianied by live juggling (four oranges, in tim with the music) on the radio - trust me, it's true - that was performed by an Argentinian pan-pipe player from Chile!
