Why did my speakers on my computer stop working?

My Speakers suddenly stopped working. Yes, they are plugged in. They only work through earphones. I have Windows XP, and desktop speakers. Any suggestions?

Borrow some other speakers and see if they play.
Check the volume control level on the taskbar.
Try reloading the driver program in Control Panel.
