I find it very ironic that some people who give answers are rated top contributors, yet theirs are the answers that are the most opinionated and biased of all. Are these the people who just want to voice their say somewhere, just for the sake of it? If you're a top contributor, you would think it would be to contribute something worth contributing. When someone asks a question, they want a relevant answer, not a piece of someone's mind.

Relevant is subjective. This is the philosophy section. There are no right or wrong answers, only opinions. So to call one's answer "opinionated" is almost a compliment, since they obviously have a strong opinion. I try to be fairly open in my answers & to weigh both sides. When I answer a question it obviously reflects my own opinions, ideas & feelings. People are free to reject or accept it. I am delighted when people appreciate my answers and choose me as best answer. The only one who has the right to judge the answers is the asker, they know what they are looking for & are entitled to pick the one they like the best. Or if they don't choose one then it goes to a vote.

As far as "top contributors" goes that's a fairly new thing (yahoo answers likes to keep changing it up with different gimmicks such as the stars etc) and I think it just refers to quantity of answers, not necessarily quality. I've been doing this since September last year & I've reached level 6 (or is it 7 now?) but someone who's just started this would be level 1. It's very addictive! I love it. It's the only way I survive 12 hour shifts at my hellish job. It's nice to be able to hop on a soap box once in a while & have my say & to have people understand, agree with & respect what I have to say. It's a way of connecting with people, strangers that I'll never meet. I think it's pretty cool anyway, but what do I know?

Anyway, that's my answer. I hope it wasn't too opinionated. You are free to accept or reject it.

:)

when you think about it... top contributor really means top "quantity" contributor. Yahoo has little or no way to define a quality contributor. Just for fun... take a look at how many points a top contributor has and notice how ago they started posting. If not more than a month or two or even three or four or six months ago they are just her doing this because they like to hear themself talk kinda like Doctor Laura. One other thing to think about is if they hold a job just imagine what a poor worker they are for surfing the internet and gold-bricking and getting paid for it on company time

A few days ago I lost the Top Contributor label and I really don't care. Remember that the best answers are not necessary the correct or the "best" one. Sometimes I see best answers that are completely incorrect or are a copy-paste from wikipedia.
Remember that the people here don't make themselves Top Contributors is a determination of YA.

Well, they are called the "top" contributors but not the "best" contributors. Yahoo program just count the number of answers they write. I can also write a problem to write anything into each question, whether relevant or not.

It all depends on what criteria they use to decide who is a "top contributor". If it's just raw number of answers, then you're going to get opinionated people, because they usually feel they must enlighten others.

As said in previous answers... forget about outside approval, it'll drive you insane. Use this 'non' forum as your own tool.

I don't disagree with what you say, BTW, but if it is that important to you, then here's a bit of wisdom that someone gave me one time... don't try to take away the advantage someone has because you think it's unfair. Figure out how they got that extra something and get it for yourself.

Whether or not they have it unfairly will not diminish my attainment of the same.

Peace

Y!A just recently started this "top contributors" thing and it's based on quantity, not quality, of answers. Don't let the insensitive folks bother you... keep up the good fight!

You should then ask for specific answers, from people that have just that knowledge, and say" please I only want answers from people that know for sure"....... come on, most of the questions asked are asking for opinions..... and where do opinions can from? A piece of our mind , maybe..... actually the question you just posed was very opinionated, where you just giving us a piece of your mind......

Is this a case of the pot calling the ... you go, girl. Are you an aries or scorpio, btw? :))) It's rather difficult, is it not, to not insert some personal biases into your writing? We all have a POV, after all :)

aren't most of the answers a piece of someone's mind. That is where the voting and thumbs up or down come in.
