That cannot be answered. Rock has existed for a little more than 50 years and hip hop is relatively new. Also, it all depends on opinion and exposure. I like both, but because rock has been around more, I like more rock songs.

First of all, I would not base your opinion on which genre is more known, sells more cds, etc. This means nothing as to how good the music is. Especially today, the best music is usually lesser known, because major record labels only promote and put out the music that will make the most money. And that music is mostly mindless garbage that the mainstream listener can party to without having to think.

Hip hop is my favorite genre so I personally think it's better. However, I don't think it can be said that one is truly better than the other. It's all based upon opinion.

It's pains me to see when someone hates on hip hop because they knew it as some of those garbage songs on the radio. Those songs are not authentic hip hop, but commercial hip hop. I feel it is an embarrassment to the genre for these songs to be categorized under the same name. So, do yourself a favor and check out some real hip hop before you judge it. Some artists to start with could be De La Soul, The Roots, Digable Planets, Organized Konfusion and Gangstarr. Keep in mind that authentic hip hop uses figurative language such as metaphors and similes so the words and phrases cannot always be taken literally, just like a poem or story. I could go more into hip hop, but hopefully this is enough to make a point.

Seller?? Just because 80,000,000 people suddenly want to hear a garbage can get hit in rhythm wouldn't make it music. That's sheepism. Music is played for the heart.

Rock is older, and has the pedigree. It also has more diversity of artists (black, Asian, white) etc. than hip-hop so we know it can touch a wider base.

Rock stars are musicians for 1.(well,most)

Most rock artists spend countless hours practicing with REAL instruments....not all clamoring around an 80 thousand dollar synthesizer looping beats and adding catchy sounds.

There, thats the difference. My ears can identify real talent when I hear it.

I love rock n roll.

Rock, because hip-hop is basically just old 80's pop songs with untalented fast-talkers rambling about how they shot hos. Or some untalented female fast-talker pretending that "Oohss!" and "Dadas!" are lyrics.
Rock is very better. Especially progrock and punk.

I honestly prefer rock music. Hip-hop these days really does not thrill me what-so-ever. People turned basically just TALKING into " rap " and " hip-hop. " I don't like it, I can't stand it. Why can't there be better groups these days like ACDC ? Sh-t like " shake ya money maker like somebody 'bout ta pay ya... " is just ridiculous. It is not music ; it is crap. Nothing in those songs is even meaningful.

No question, rock. Hip-hop has no melody, so technically, you can't even classify it as music.
