sōō-dō'kōō
A puzzle in which a grid consisting of several regions is to be filled with numbers so that every row, column, and region contains only one instance of each number. This puzzle came into being in the United States during the 1980's
It is Japanese 'suudoku', which is a contraction of suu(ji wa) doku(shin ni kagiru), and that means "the numbers must be unmarried" (that is, occur singly). :-)
