This is probably ich (Ichthyophthirius multifilis)

Ich, also called white spot disease, is one of the most common protozoan infections affecting aquarium fishes.

Malachite Green/ Formalin combination has generally been the most effective for moderate to severe infestations. “Quick Cure” is good product with this combination of medications (Malachite Green/ Formalin). While a somewhat newer product “Sea Chem ParaGuard” is slightly safer, albeit also slightly less strong formulation.

That sounds a lot like Ick. It isn't too serious if it is treated in time. Go to your local pet store. I would ask one of the workers there what the best treatment for it would be. I use Ick Away.

A treatment I used for ich was to raise the tanks temp to 82 and treat it with meds for 12 days.

I work at Petco and have had people ask this a few times. More than likely, your fish has ich. Go to a pet store, buy some medication and use it according to the directions on the label.

It sounds like ick, and please don't hesitate to treat this disease, as it makes your fish sick very fast (secondary infections). I've found Ick Guard, by Jungle Laboratories, to be a great treatment for ick. Adding aquarium salt will help him, too.
