There is nothing to be feared with silence; unless it is actually upset that one's question was not answered.
In the course of a conversation; so long as those involved get sufficient response there need be no fear of silence!

Mrs. Badg, I think that most people, including myself really dont fear silence in a conversation, we just find it awkward. Some people actually hope for a break in talking. there should not be fear at all if you are sitting there talking, or even enjoying the silence as long as you have someone to share it with. There are too many people in the world that are truly alone.

Do you?
The silence isn't empty... there is always something happening in it. What are you doing and feeling? What is the other doing and feeling?
Find what there is in the silence...by knowing it there will no longer be any need to fear it.

Why would anyone fear the silence? Unless it's awkward silence, like on those cell phone commercials where the calls were dropped. So there's silence, so what? I don't fear it.

In private or social conversation I am not fond of silence and I will often cover it up with words, meaningful or nonsense, just anything will help..
In interviewing for research I try to be more embracive of the silence and let the interview respondent chose the pace of silence covering..

I love silence instead. Because in silence you can be more mindful and contemplative about everything in this life. When you are feel so comfortable in silence in any kind of contexts means you are a thoughtful one, in sort of speak.

Some of the deepest communication comes with silence, some times we hide behind chatter.
