I am not finding a Ph.D program, but the San Francisco School of Circus Arts seems to have a rather extensive and serious program.
Their Clown Conservatory program partners with one of the California colleges to offer degrees up to an MA or MFA.
The aerial program takes up to three years of intensive and dedicated work. It does not look like you get a Ph.D, but that is about as much classwork as a Ph.D would require. I guess this gives new meaning to the term "higher education".
Now keep in mind that the Ph.D degree is a research and teaching degree, and the key requirement for teaching at a university. In looking at the bios of some people who teach circus arts, I see that they do not have Ph.D's in circus arts. They generally have backgrounds in theatre, gymnastics, dance, martial arts, etc. If you want to teach circus arts, that may be the way to go.
