help them break apart words, use context words, pictures, and become fluent reading stories

help them with tricks on how to solve problems on their own
tips to add, to subtract, to do problems solving. (help them draw pictures to solve things on their own)
quiz them -- help to turn subjects into games with flash cards at least once a week if you can.
the goal is to help them think and help them with strategies to help them become better students.

if you want - you can make puzzles with spelling words on school.discovery.com
what do you think? $5an hour a weekly rate? an amount per boy? with three you can ask for extra hazard pay?
ask what some of the neighbors get for babysitting. ask if they are willing to haggle on the price. maybe they will be playful about it and offer a bonus if the boys get certain grades on spelling tests. dont be pushy- they will be your neighbor for along time.

i realize that is hard but just ask them what they need help on. it is really simple. they will tell you exactly what they dont understand and if you're probly in junior high, 1st graders will be easier than you think to tutor and if they say they dont get it, you ask them what part of the question they dont get! well, i hope you find tutoring 1st graders to be fun and exciting! chow for now!!
