In my apartment, my front room with the big windows is already starting to get hot. My bedroom has cinderblock and it stays quite cool, even in the summer. So, do ya think a big fan in the front room, in the window will keep the front room cool, or should i just bite it and get an a/c. They are not that much, but i'd like not to buy one if i can possible avoid it. Thanks.

Yes, a fan certainly will improve thermal conditions in a house at certain times.

If you buy a window unit, it will need to be at least 1/4 HP and here is the key, you will need a supply window at the back of the house so it can draw air "across the house" . By keeping air moving it will not let the room air stagnate plus the fact that if you are sitting in a chair it will evaporate the perspiration off of you skin and cool you too.

The negitives are it brings in a lot of dust, pollen and mold mildew and the like. Outside air isnt very clean particularly in the city or on farm in dry conditions, Lots of that dust and stuff. The other negitive is it doesnt draw down the humidity to the comfort level, and humid air is uncomfortable.

Given all of that lots of people use an Attic fan placed upstairs in a spot where it exhausts into the attic and draws thru downstairs windows, particularly at night when it cools off outside this is an effective tool to cool your home with and it does cool down the sleeping rooms upstairs too rapidly that is .
