protective coloration which means they can change color to blend into their surroundings. their eyes can turn 360 degrees, so they can see all around them. each eye works independently of the other. an ability to hold absolutely still so as not to attract attention.

Chameleons DO NOT change color to blend...... that is an old wives tale. I would like to see this guy (see pic) change to blend in with a green tree:

Most chameleons can vary their colors somewhat - others can go from green to orange - but it is a emotional response - not camoflauge. Breeding time is a good opportunity to see changes in color, as the most dramatic color changes occur when two males are courting the same female.

Other survival techniques include shadowing. This is when the chameleon expells all the air in it's lungs, flattens to pencil thinness and turns around the stick of a tree. If you look closely - you might be able to see the eyes and toes - only. See pic:

Another way of defending itself is to inflate their lungs and get as big as possible - turning sideways. This is a tactic to scare away predators. See pic:

One other defense is to fall from the branch and appear to be dead. This is a method practiced by many of the smaller chameleons.

I hope that helps.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

Actually, some chameleons do change color, duhh. It is proven, I have two Panther chameleons, and they change from light blue to red, and they do this as an emotional response, but they cannot blend in with any color, like many people think.

they have protective camoflage..(however you spell it). ans they have other useful defense mechanisma as well, like they have claws to scurry up trees with, and the color camouflage helps them hide from bigger and more dangerous predators.
