Your iron may be too hot. Follow the instructions that came with the garment. Cottons and linens can be ironed on hot or 5 and 6 setting. Rayons and polyesters get ironed on 3 or 4 setting. If you want to clean the iron, wait till it cools completely, then use mild soap and a sponge to remove the stuck on fabric, or use something non sharp to scrape it off. And I hate to tell ya, but Silverstone and Teflon is two of the worst materials used to finish an iron. Dupont (the manufacturer of these materials ) would like you to think otherwise, however they're full of manure. If I were you I would get an iron with a chrome metal sole plate.

This is probably a stupid answer, but its what i do...i sewed together 2 bar towels on 3 sides...i fill it with ice cubes and sprinkle salt on the top towel and rub the iron over it on the hottest setting, when the ice melts and mixes with the salt it makes a mild abrassive and cleans it all off and it wont harm the iron.
you could probably use baking soda instead of salt, i just thought of that, i think i'll try it next time

Cleaning an iron with rough or sticky spots on its surface can be cleaned by running it, set at low, over a piece of brown paper with salt on it.

Faultless (that's the brand name) makes a product called Hot Iron Cleaner. It's amazing! My husband starches the crap out of his shirts and it makes the sole plate a mess! This stuff works like a charm and is pretty cheap. Find it in the laundry aisle probably hanging on one of those strips they suspend in front of the shelves.
