Myths were once someone's living religion.

Some folk tales may have been inspired by earlier religions or religious stories from neighbors, but most are just oral traditions and stories.

It really depends on WHICH myths and folk tales you are referring to.

Myths are complete lies and Folktales are sometimes true.

myths - come from the greek gods mythology mainly and have a moral to them
fokelore - are stories passed down from generation to generation
