My wife and I want to move to Florida for the sunshine and to be near family. Her parents live in Ocala, mine in Melbourne. Ideally we'd like to be within at least an hour and a half of each location. Any suggestions where we should look? We are both in our 20's (I'll be 30 next month). Thanks!

We've considered the Orlando and Jacksonville areas or somewhere around those areas. Are there any nice areas of Orlando that are not touristy? We'd like to be in at least shouting distance to a city.

Since your parents live there, and I'm assuming you've visited them, I will tell you anyway - STAY AWAY FROM BREVARD COUNTY! This includes Melbourne, Palm Bay, Cocoa Beach, Titusville, Melbourne Beach, Merritt Island, and whatever other cities are packed into the Space Coast. I lived there for 6 months, and let me tell you from first hand experience, unless you have a lot of money to live in a nice upscale neighborhood or unless you're about to retire, you don't have ANYTHING going for you.

I've experience the pain that is Melbourne. In the time that I was there, I had the utmost difficult time finding a job - especially with a vast list of qualifications for various positions - and unless you want to be flipping burgers for minimum wage, I'd stay away. No way can you support a family there.

That being said, there's so much more that Florida has to offer. Having travelled throughout the whole state, I would say, since I myself am starting a family, I would settle in Lake County (metro Orlando - absolutely GORGEOUS area, and very affordable), Jacksonville, or Pensacola. The latter, you have a lot of hurricane threats.. but then again, so does most of Florida.

To sum up, stay away from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Hell, stay away from the East Coast in general unless you settle on Jacksonville which is an amazing town. I would say if I was to redo things, I would go to either Lake County or Jacksonville. The abundance of jobs, friendliness and safeness of the cities, and overall very cheap cost of living (not to mention the weather) is a huge selling point for me. I wouldn't be in a crappy situation now had I done things right the first time.

Don't make the same mistakes I did.

Good luck. You'll really enjoy Florida! I know if I get the means to soon, I'll be back.

I know that Melbourne has plenty of job opportunities, and is growing like crazy! Palm Bay, which is on the outskirts of Melbourne would probably be cheaper to live. I don't know about the Ocala area, sorry!
Hope this helps!!

Depends on where you want to be . City life ( Orlando, Jacksonville) or suburbia south Florida / Central Florida or South west Florida)

St Augustine I heard is very pretty and close to the water . You will be near to Daytona also .

Orlando will put you probably an hour to an hour and a half from each depending where you find a place.

Deland is a nice town. However, other than location you need to be specific about your interests, etc.
